Future of Utilities, Amsterdam — The Solar Heat Revolution Begins

At the 2024 Future of Utilities: Energy Transition Summit in Amsterdam, industrial decarbonization took centre stage. CleanTech Region Group founder Lars Ling delivered a keynote that reframed how Europe must think about industrial heat — the hidden giant of global energy use.

Industrial heat accounts for half of global industrial energy demand, yet most of it falls within a temperature range ideally suited to solar thermal. While the world often focuses on electrification, Lars emphasized that electricity alone cannot decarbonize industry at the speed or scale required. Check Absolicon Solar Collector for more info.

The case for solar thermal heat is straightforward:

• It replaces fossil heat directly.

• It delivers predictable, low operating costs.

• It integrates seamlessly with existing industrial systems.

• It scales across sectors: food & beverage, pulp & paper, mining, textiles, chemicals, and district heating.

• It works perfectly with thermal storage and hybrid systems.

Combined with intelligent energy management and flexible industrial processes, solar thermal heat offers one of the fastest, cheapest, and most impactful climate actions available today.

Lars highlighted global examples — from Nordic innovation to African deployment — showing that solar heat at scale is no longer a pilot concept. It is a proven industrial solution.

The summit made one thing clear: Industrial decarbonization starts with heat. And the heat of the future is solar.

CleanTech Region Group helps organizations, cities, and energy companies accelerate the shift to sustainable, solar-powered industry across the Nordics, Europe, Africa, and Silicon Valley.
